About this Series

For generations, children have laughed with this heartwarming family of bears that lives in a big tree house down a sunny dirt road. Stan and Jan Berenstain published their first Berenstain Bears book in 1962 with the support of their friend Dr. Seuss. Since then, the Bear family has grown from three to five members, and the ever-popular series has been translated into over a dozen languages and sold more than 300 million books worldwide. Over their 50 years of publication, the Bears have tackled many important issues, from bullying and poor sportsmanship to online safety and childhood obesity. The Berenstains, who always wrote and illustrated their books together, often drew inspiration from their own family experiences, which Stan credited for the series' continued relevance: "Kids still tell fibs and they mess up their rooms and they still throw tantrums in the supermarket. They are problems, but they're the kind of typical family problems everyone goes through." No matter what they are struggling with, the Bears always respond with optimism and kindheartedness. Ultimately, the stories are about the power of family members to love one another in the midst of life's many ups and downs. Stan Berenstain passed away in 2005 and Jan in 2012, but their children Mike and Leo have continued their work and are publishing new books in the series.
