Summary
Patricia is Russian and Jewish, but she loves attending Baptist church on Sundays with her friends Winston and Stewart and Gramma Eula Mae, who has been Patricia's surrogate grandmother since her own babushka died. On the walk home from church they always stop in front of Mr. Kodinski's shop so Gramma Eula can admire the hats on display (which she could never afford), then head home for a delicious chicken dinner with all the fixings.
The kids hatch a plan to buy Gramma Eula a hat from the shop, but when they go to ask Mr. Kodinski for work, he shoos them away, mistaking them for children who pelted his shop with eggs. To prove they are really good kids, they make Mr. Kodinski traditional Russian hand-dyed eggs. He is so touched by their beautiful gift that he lets the kids make and sell the eggs in his shop. Soon the children have enough money to buy Gramma Eula Mae a brand-new hat for Easter.
