Summary

More
Bill and Marilyn Bricker fell in love with Socks the moment they saw him come out of the mailbox near the supermarket. Marilyn thought a kitten would look perfect sleeping in front of the fireplace of their new house. Bill's mom wouldn't let him have a cat when he was a kid, and he's always wanted one. So they bring Socks home.

Soon this adorable white-pawed tabby is sitting in the lap of luxury—and in Marilyn's lap. His new owners adore him. They buy him raw meat to eat and wipe his wet paws with new bath towels and retrieve the toys he can't reach under the dresser. Life could not be better.

Then disaster strikes. Marilyn has a baby.

Now Socks is no longer the family's pride and joy. Little Charles William is. The Brickers feed him and burp him and cuddle with him, and Socks feels totally ignored—and unloved!

So what does a kitty have to do to get some attention? How about get into trouble? Will Socks ever be happy again? Purr-haps. Wait and see in this classic feline page-turner.

About the Author

Beverly Cleary is the Newbery Medal–winning author of more than 30 books for children. When she was a young girl, Ms. Cleary lived in a town so small it had no library. Perhaps it was this lack of books on hand that led the author to write the kinds of books (and create the many characters) she wished she could have encountered as child. Beverly Cleary's books are full of charming adventure and are beloved for their warmth, wit, and welcoming feel.
