While riding the subway home from the pool with his abuela one day, Julián notices three women spectacularly dressed up. Their hair billows in brilliant hues, their dresses end in fishtails, and their joy fills the train car. When Julián gets home, daydreaming of the magic he’s seen, all he can think about is dressing up just like the ladies in his own fabulous mermaid costume: a butter-yellow curtain for his tail, the fronds of a potted fern for his headdress. But what will abuela think about the mess he makes—and even more importantly, what will she think about how Julián sees himself?

Un día, de vuelta a su casa en el subway desde la piscina con su abuela, Julián nota tres mujeres con disfraces espectaculares. Sus cabellos voluminosos teñidos en tonos que brillan, sus vestidos terminan en colas de pez y su alegría inunda el carro del tren. Cuando Julián llega a casa, soñando despierto con la magia que ha visto, solo puede pensar en disfrazarse como las mujeres con su propio traje fabuloso de sirena: una cortina color mantequilla amarillenta para la cola, la fronda de un helecho en maceta para su tocado. ¿Pero qué pensará abuela sobre el desorden que haga, y más importante aún, qué irá a pensar sobre cómo Julián se ve a sí mismo?
