Summary

More
Elly's life is filled with simple things: school, dance classes, her beloved doll, and the birth of her baby brother. As she imagines what their lives will be like when they grow up, the Nazis come to town, and all her dreams vanish. Elly and her family are taken from their home in Romania to a concentration camp. Once they arrive, Elly, with her blond hair and Germanic appearance, is separated from her dark-haired mother and brother. She never sees them again.

Elly experiences starvation, disease, slave labor, and horrific living conditions—but because of her endurance and an incredible amount of luck, she survives. Her important and moving story is told in simple, straightforward chapters that are all the more haunting for their bare and honest truth.
