About this Series

A.J. would rather play video games than go to school. But Ella Mentry is no ordinary school—it's staffed by grown-ups who are offbeat, kooky, and just plain weird. In fact, they're so weird that it's usually up to A.J. and his pals to restore order when things get a little out of hand. In the meantime, the kids discover that school can be fun—even the learning part.

These irreverent early chapter books feature cartoon illustrations and characters whose antics will have readers expecting the unexpected. The original My Weird School series has branched out into My Weird School Daze (following the kids from second to third grade) and My Weirder School (which brings the weirdness of the outside world to Ella Mentry).

About the Author

Becoming a successful children's book author was no easy slam dunk for Dan Gutman. He received hundreds of rejection letters before finally deciding to write about what he loved: sports! In 1997 he wrote an article for Discover magazine about the science of spitballs, scuffballs, and corked bats, and in 1994, when his son was four years old, he tried his hand at writing sports fiction for children.

About his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, Gutman writes: "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a world. Around the same time, I started visiting schools, giving a program in which I use sports to get the students excited about reading and writing."

Following the early success of sports series like Baseball Card Adventures, about a boy who can travel through time to meet sports legends when he touches a baseball card, Gutman branched out as a writer, creating historical mystery novels and the hugely popular My Weird School chapter book series.
