The narrator's dad is named Elmer Elevator. And like his unusual name, this man's life has had lots of ups and downs, starting when he was a little boy.…It was way back then that Elmer heard of a fantastic, faraway place known as Wild Island. And on this island was a great injustice. A group of animals had captured (and were keeping) a flying dragon so the beast could fly residents back and forth across a dangerous river. Elmer can't stand it! So he packs up some surprising supplies and heads off on a secret rescue mission. Will he succeed? Will his journey be magical?

About the Author

Ruth Stiles Gannett wrote My Father's Dragon just a few years after her graduation from Vassar College in 1944, completing the writing of the book in just two weeks. It was her family who encouraged Gannett to write the book, and from the beginning it was a family project. Her stepmother, Ruth Chrisman Gannett, did the illustrations, and Peter Kahn, a calligraphy professor and her husband-to-be, chose the type.

My Father’s Dragon was an immediate success, becoming a Newbery Honor book, and was soon followed by two sequels, Elmer and the Dragon and The Dragons of Blueland. All three dragon stories have been continuously in print since their initial publication, beloved by readers who have grown up to share them with their own children…and their grandchildren too.
