Summary

More
For a kid like Lilly, Mr. Slinger is the best teacher ever. He loves the stories she writes and encourages her creativity with his Lightbulb Lab. But when she brings her shiny new purse to school and starts causing a distraction, Mr. Slinger has to take it away until the end of the day. Henkes perfectly captures the tumult of emotions that Lilly experiences—her passion for school and her favorite teacher, her joy in her new purse, her fury at Mr. Slinger, and her eventual regret when she draws a mean picture of him. Honest and funny, this endearing story reassures kids that it's okay to make mistakes—especially if they're followed by a sincere apology.

About the Author

Award-winning author Kevin Henkes arrived at University of Wisconsin in the late 1970s already deeply interested in children's books. The summer after his freshman year, he traveled to New York to meet with editors and was awarded his first book contract on the spot. Over the next few decades, Henkes produced some of children's literature's most memorable characters (most of them mice) in picture books like A Weekend with Wendell, Chrysanthemum, and Lilly's Plastic Purse.

Henkes is the winner of two Caldecott Honors (for Owen and Waiting), a Caldecott Medal for Kitten's First Full Moon, and Newbery Honors for each of his novels, Olive's Ocean and The Year of Billy Miller. Known for the deep empathy he shows for his animal characters as they face the small daily challenges of growing up, Henkes is able to handle older themes like tragedy and loss as well, making him one of the most versatile children's book authors writing today.
