The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
Edward Tulane has everything a china rabbit could wish for—handmade silk suits, shoes of the finest leather, a gold pocket watch, and a ten-year-old girl who adores him. But Edward feels nothing for Abilene or her parents or her grandmother. He is pleasant and polite to them, but his heart is cold. He cannot love them in return. When the family goes on a voyage, Edward is lost along the way…and his heart-aching journey begins. As he goes from owner to owner and from one misfortune to the next, he starts feeling powerful emotions he never felt before—gratitude, concern…and love. Will Edward ever find his way back to Abilene and her family?

The Tale of Despereaux
Despereaux Tilling is the very last mouse to be born to his mother—and the only one of his litter to survive. But his arrival is not a joy. His family can't see beyond Despereaux's many oddities: his ears are too big, his body is too small, and his eyes are wide open from the start. And there is a lot for one little mouse to see. The castle where the Tillings nest is a maze of wonder and exploration for young Despereaux. Before long he sees and falls in love with the beautiful—and human—Princess Pea. But speaking to her lands him in the dungeon, where scary creatures roam. Will this be the end of Despereaux?

About the Author

Kate DiCamillo suffered from chronic pneumonia as a child, and entertained herself by reading. She says that she "learned to rely on stories as a way of understanding the world." After working in a book warehouse for four years, DiCamillo began writing at the age of 29 and soon realized that hard work is often more important than talent in becoming a writer. She offers this advice to budding writers: "Pay attention to the world around you. Stories are hiding, waiting everywhere. You just have to open your eyes and your heart."

"I always think of illustration as a form of acting," says Timothy Basil Ering. "Each time I approach a project I need to become the character I'm depicting. And then I have to choose the appropriate medium that will allow me to speak in that voice."
