The day begins on the school bus, with its slippery seats, mean kids, and egg salad smell. After surviving the ride to school, Junie B. isn't sure she can get back on the bus. What will she do? Can she really stay in school forever and never go home? The first day of kindergarten for this spirited kid is full of hilarious disappointments, unexpected friendships, and (thank goodness) no accidents.

About this Series

Barbara Park's #1 New York Times bestselling chapter book series, Junie B. Jones, is a classroom favorite that's been keeping kids laughing—and reading—for decades with over 60 million copies in print. The series features the exploits of Juniper Beatrice Jones, who begins the series as a girl of five just entering kindergarten, and follows her through first grade. Born in June, she prefers "Junie," and she doesn't like the name Beatrice at all, so it's just "B." Junie is bright, friendly, and opinionated, with a ready list of favorite foods and pet peeves to share with anyone who will listen.

The series revolves around Junie B.'s comical interactions with her family, friends, and teachers—as well as her struggles with her rivals, including May (who, infuriatingly, leaves out the B. in her name) and Jim (who turns out to be not so bad after all when he chooses Junie as his valentine). Junie B. is a perennial favorite among grade school readers who love her spunk—and her quirky June-speak that feels spot-on realistic, even when the grammar is, comically, just a little off-kilter.

About the Author

Best known for her Junie B. Jones books, Barbara Park (1947–2013) was author of over 50 books and the winner of dozens of awards for children's literature. Trained in secondary education, she described her student teaching experience as a "nightmare" and decided to try her hand at humor writing instead, since she'd been voted "wittiest" by her high school senior class.

As funny in reality as her fictional characters, Park became famous for her humorous interactions with her legions of young readers. Asked when her birthday was, Park answered, "April 21st, 1812…I don't want to brag, but I think I've held up well." Asked what she did when she wasn't writing, she replied, "I eat frozen M&Ms." She once said of her most popular series: "I've never been sure whether Junie B.'s fans love her in spite of her imperfections…or because of them. But either way, she's gone out into the world and made more friends than I ever dreamed possible."
