The news spread like wildfire in 1849—gold had been found in a part of the California Territory. Lot and lots of gold! Soon many thousands of people from all over the United States and around the world caught “gold fever.” Calling themselves forty-niners, they left their jobs and families behind and rushed to California any way they could.
