About this Series

Jeff Kinney's #1 bestselling series began in 1998, when he pitched an idea to publishers about a middle school weakling named Greg Heffley who chronicled his trials and tribulations in a series of simple drawings and handwritten notes. Kinney released an online version of Diary of a Wimpy Kid in 2004 and published the first actual book in 2007.

Since then, Greg's comic book diaries have given voice to the culture and concerns of a whole generation of middle school readers, proving they are not alone in feeling odd or out of step. Greg faces his challenges—including epic battles with bullies, his brother, and his mom— always with predictable good humor. He's surprisingly resilient for a stick figure, and his fans don't need to see him in living color to know he's as full-bodied and realistic as a fictional middle school character can be.

Kinney's breakaway series proves what good storytellers have known for ages: You don't need lots of bells and whistles to command the attention and win the loyalty of young readers…just great characters and a darn good story! Jeff Kinney has won or been nominated for Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards every year since 2008. Greg has his own movie now, and over 180 million copies of the books have been sold to readers worldwide.

About the Author

Jeff Kinney is an online game developer, a designer, the creator of Poptropica.com, and the author and illustrator of the wildly popular Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Born in Maryland in the 1970s, Jeff spent his childhood reading books by Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, Piers Anthony, and J.R.R. Tolkien. While attending the University of Maryland in the early 1990s, he created a successful comic strip for the campus newspaper and resolved to develop his own cartoon series.

Although Kinney started writing down ideas for his first Wimpy Kid book in 1998, it wasn't until spring of 2007, after Greg Heffley's comic misadventures had become wildly popular online, that the book was finally published. It quickly became a New York Times bestseller, eventually rising to the #1 spot. Only two years later, in 2009, Kinney's name was added to the TIME 100, the magazine's list of the world's most influential people.
