Summary

More
Sight words are words that should be recognized on sight rather than sounded out. They are the most frequently used words in the English language, such as and, the, and but. Children learning to read are encouraged to practice and memorize these words to become fluent readers who are able to read rapidly enough to understand the meaning of a sentence.

Packed in a sturdy box, the little books (each 5½" x 4¼") feature simple, funny stories illustrated with line drawings to delight children and help instill a love of reading. Even the newest readers gain a sense of accomplishment in being able to read, and also in being able to finish an entire book.

Created by reading expert B. L. Maslen, the ten books in this set—from the top-selling reading program in the U.S.—gently introduce children to kindergarten sight words. Word repetition helps children succeed as their reading skills increase.

About this Series

Developed by veteran classroom teacher Bobby Lynn Maslen and John Maslen, an award-winning watercolor painter, Bob Books began as a classroom "cottage industry" and developed into one of the most popular learn-to-read programs in America. The first books were handmade, inspired by two small dolls—one circular and one triangular—that Maslen bought at a craft fair. She named the dolls Mat and Sam and spun simple stories about them, illustrated with line drawings that the children could copy and color. The stories were very personal and customized to each one of her students. Soon it became too cumbersome to make books for each student, so Maslen standardized the set and persuaded her school to print 300 copies…and Bob Books were born.

The series starts the earliest readers with carefully chosen letter sounds, words, and short sentences that make learning to read simple and fun—for instance, the first book can be read in its entirety using only four letters. The Bob Books collection now includes a full range of books for emergent readers, including series about word families, compound words, long vowels, and rhyming words—all using the same bare-bones format that strips reading down to the essentials so virtually anyone can learn.
